Alfred S. McLaren is a retired captain in the US Navy. In the 1960s, he participated in three expeditions in nuclear attack submarines under the polar ice. A physical geography specialist, he has spent many long days in the boreal depths measuring the thickness of the polar ice and mapping uncharted seabeds. He is currently a writer and president emeritus of The Explorers Club, an association that supports scientific exploration.
