Laurent Mayet

Laurent Mayet is Special Representative for Polar Affairs and coordonator of the implementation of the national roadmap on the Arctic at the ministry of Foreign Affairs of France, since July 2016. He has been working as advisor to the former Prime minister Michel Rocard, ambassador for Polar Affairs, for 8 years (2009-2016) coordinating the development of the National roadmap on the Arctic which was officially presented on the 14th of June 2016.

As a Senior officer reservist in the Navy, Laurent Mayet was awarded in September 2016, bronze medal of the voluntary military service in gratitude for his engagement and committment to the Navy Reserve, especially, his chairmanship of the working group on the Arctic at the Navy Center of strategic studies, which lead to a non-public deliverable entitled “Arctic Ocean Opening”.

His passion for the polar regions led him to co-found the NGO, le Cercle Polaire (www.lecerclepolaire.com) in 2006, where he is working to develop a greater knowledge and better governance of the polar regions. He is the co-director of the yearly magazine North and South Poles and returns regularly to both the Arctic and the Antarctic.

Laurent is a senior lecturer in International Relations at Sciences Po. After receiving a degree in oceanography and passing the high level French teaching examination in physical science, he converted to the philosophy of science. He holds a postgraduate degree in philosophy and taught natural philosophy at University Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne for fifteen years (1991-2007). He was chief editor of the Special Issue at "Sciences et Avenir" (1995-2007) and co-directed the Special Issue of "Le Nouvel Observateur" with the founder Jean Daniel (2001-2007).
