Carlo Alberto Ricci teaches petrography in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Siena. He has taken part in five Antarctic scientific missions and in 2003 became the chairman of the National Scientific Commission on the Antarctic, which oversees the Italian Antarctic research programmes. He is chairman of the European Polar Board, a body responsible for coordinating European polar research.
